Lung cancer is a debilitating disease. It is also among the highest causes of death in an annual basis. Most people obtain lung cancer from smoking and also from the rising air pollution which our environment has grown into these days. Lung cancer can also be obtained by second hand smokers or people who do not really smoke but only inhale the smoke puffed out of the smokers themselves. There are ways in which lung cancer can be fought off. A dose of prevention really goes a long way in order to keep oneself from having lung cancer. And apart from this dose of prevention, it is also important that people become aware of its symptoms in order to detect it immediately.

Medical experts say that lung cancer can be a very tricky thing. At first, you might end up thinking that it is but another common illness which can be treated by any form of medication. However, as lung cancer progresses it would eventually be harder to fight until such time that it reaches a malignant stage. Therefore, it is important the regular checkups be done in order to see the first few symptoms of lung cancer. This is especially important if you have a history of the said disease within your family. You should know that a whopping 25% of the lung cancer patients often get diagnosed without any apparent symptoms. As such, regular checkups become vital.

The symptoms of lung cancer can be greatly affected by the smoking patterns of a person. Someone who is on his or her early twenties may not be diagnosed with the illness just yet. However, a 50 years old person who has been smoking for nearly more than half of his life is very much susceptible to lung cancer. But among those who have been diagnosed as positive with lung cancer, 80% of the said population exhibited a persistent kind of coughing for over a long period of time. This symptom is also known as the “smoker’s cough.” If the person who has lung cancer does not complain of any persistent coughing, that does not make things easier. In cases such as this, the patient may already have some tumors growing inside his lungs instead of the irritating and persistent coughing.

Another obvious and severe symptom of lung cancer can be found in bloody coughing. This happens because it is already indicative of an enlarged tumor. As the tumor inside the patient grows bigger, it will eventually bleed. Thus the bleeding will come out and brought forth by the force of coughing. When this happens, a mucus type of blood is what usually comes out from coughing. If in case a bloody cough already happens, it is extremely important that you have a doctor look at the situation.

Another symptom of lung cancer is wheezing. This particular symptom is characterized by an extreme difficulty in breathing thus the wheezing sounds made when breathing. This is again caused by the tumors as it already becomes large enough to block the airways of the patient.
